Screen-printed wool gauze, 75cm x 55cm

Exploring the intersection between femininity and craft through the use of monoprint drawings and hand-stencilled screen print, Nude Landscape celebrates perceived imperfections of the female form. Mirroring these in the imperfections inherent to handcraft processes, it presents femininity as a varying, self-defined concept. Through use of handcraft processes which both embody traditional ideals of femininity and by their nature reject exact reproduction, a portrait of imperfect and individual womanhood is created. Created by stencilling with acid dye pastes onto wool gauze, a fabric with seemingly self-contradictory properties of both delicate drape and handle as well as incredible strength and strong similarities to human hair, a bodily characteristic that has long been associated with femininity.  Nude Landscape provides an alternate narrative for femininity and gender expression, proposing an era of self-definition.
